Friday saw another huge slump for stocks in what was a brutal day. Stocks had started the day with some strength and following the release of Powell’s speech, markets moved higher. However tweets from President Trump an hour later at 11:00 AM, indicated an escalation of tariffs in the trade war with China. Stocks moved lower and within minutes had broken through 2900.
Once the S&P had fallen below 2870 the move down seemed to slow but it was nonetheless a continual drop with stocks finally collapsing in the final hour and in particular the last half hour. A small rally at the end did nothing to change the outlook for Monday.
The S&P closed at 2847 a few points below the 2850 support level.
