Investors tend to fear October as it has become synonymous with crashes but in general it is September that investors should remain concerned about as that month is when declines often become the more pronounced.

Since 1973 when I started investing there have been have been 17 declines in the fall months that gained traction in September and totaled at least 10%. These were in 1974, 1978, 1979, 1987, 1990, 1997, 2000, 2002 and 2008.  It was October in at least 10 of those declines where an actual bear market took the worst declines and ended as well.
