The final week of January saw stocks finally rebound for the first serious attempt to stop the correction in its tracks. January 2016 is now in the history books as the worst January since 2009.

January Sets The Trend

Statistically speaking January seems to set the trend for the year for stocks. That said, it is not always entirely accurate but the statistics are somewhat daunting.

Since 1950 there have been only 8 times where the January trend does not set the market up for the year. The accuracy rate is 75.4%. However since 1950 every down January has been followed by a new or continuing bear market, a 10% correction or a flat market.
