Toronto Stock Exchange Drops 96.93 Points

The Toronto Stock Exchange dropped 96.93 points today to close at 12,185.72. The drop may not seem all that severe but two sectors were particularly hard hit, banking and energy. Technology did well led by Open Text which posted better than expected revenue and earnings numbers, but that was the main bright spot for the day.

Canadian Banking Sector Hit Hard

The CBOE Crude Oil Volatility Index rose to its highest level since 2009 on Wednesday. With oil falling again to close at $27.45 (WTI) many investors are becoming very bearish on Canadian Banks. It showed up this afternoon especially into the close. The expectation that profits are going to tumble when Canadian banks announce their next quarterly earnings, has investors on edge.

Oil Continues To Fall

The other sector that took big hits again today was energy. Energy shares tumbled today with Suncor Stock down 1.4 percent and Cenovus Energy Stock plunging 8.4 percent matching a decline in Encana Stock of 8.5 percent.
