The outlook for stocks for last week was for a return to volatility and some wider swings in the market than we have seen all summer. We got the increase in volatility and wider swings, all week long.

I indicated I had expected the VIX index to move as high as 19 or even 20 and then pullback toward the end of the week. Indeed on Monday the VIX hit 20 before pulling back to close at 15.16. On Tuesday it rose again reaching 18.97 before closing at 17.85. By Friday the VIX Index closed at 15.37 marking the highest volatility for stocks since the end of June.

Still the volatility and price swings paled in comparison to those of June when the VIX Index reached a high of $26.72 on June 27.
