Those types of trades are set up in advance of a market move in anticipation that the market will move up or down in a large way. If wrong, then the trade will end with a loss. Sometimes losses can be large.
Trading The Move While It Happens
For investors who prefer to trade what they see happening in market movements rather than anticipate happening, other strategies are better choices.
For those investors, often using a strategy such as the Trading For Pennies Strategy is worthwhile as instead of trading in anticipation of a move, investors are trading during a move in the markets, up or down.
The same can be said for the spy put hedge. This is usually a day trade which is entered when the market is falling. It is rarely setup in advance in anticipation of a market move. Instead, it is setup to take advantage of a move in the market that is already underway.
